Passengers might be paying more in airline fees and have fewer flights to choose from, but at least they’re more likely to arrive on time.
In the past year, airlines steadily have become more punctual — 85.5 percent of flights arrived within 15 minutes of schedule in October, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s most recent records. That’s up from 83.8 percent in October 2010.
“We’ve never really been delayed unless it’s been in extreme weather, and the airlines [...]

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Airline stocks on ended a rough year deep in the red on Friday as sputtering demand and soaring fuel prices squeezed the industry’s profits, and 2012 is expected to be just as challenging.
“It’s going to be another tough year for airlines,” said Vicki Bryan, bond analyst with Gimme Credit. “We had a rebound in fare pricing earlier this year, but we started to lose that as demand faded. That’s going [...]

I’m sitting in O’Hare airport waiting for my second delayed flight on this itinerary. Once again I’m struck by the asymmetry of the rules airlines apply to their passengers and themselves. If I showed up an hour late for my flight, I might be able to rebook on another one, but United would charge me $150 for the change. But the airline can be as late as it likes or cancel the flight altogether and face no penalty.
It would make [...]

As we look to 2012, a key business issue for Miami-Dade County will be the status of American Airlines and what the courts will rule regarding its bankruptcy filing. It is our belief the once-largest airline in the United States likely will emerge stronger than ever, and that will be good for Miami-Dade County.
American is the last of the legacy carriers to file for Chapter 11 reorganization. Continental Airlines filed in 1983 and [...]

Advertisements that make airfares seem enticingly low will soon lose that asterisk pointing to a dense paragraph of additional taxes and fees that make a cheap ticket much more costly.
Beginning Jan. 24, the Transportation Department will enforce a rule requiring that any advertised price for air travel include all government taxes and fees. For the last 25 years, the department has allowed airlines and travel agencies to list these government-imposed fees separately, resulting in a paragraph of fine print disclaimers [...]

Michael Boyd, the president of the consulting company Boyd Group International, sums up the phenomenon succinctly. “The cost of flying airplanes across the sky has eclipsed the ability to support it at many communities,” he said in a recent [...]
