Passing gas (“farting”) is the oldest form of humor. Jokes about it are found in the earliest Roman and Greek literature. In modern times many books have been written on the topic, from humorous to scientific. We have a multitude of sayings to refer to it: “Who cut the cheese?” “Do you hear the barking spiders?” “Him that smelt it, dealt it.” The woodcut above is from Martin Luther’s 1545 Depictions of the Papacy. Rude, but gets a point across.

On average we each pass gas an average of 14 times a day. Certain foods can increase your “need” to let go: beans, lentils, dairy products, onions, garlic, scallions, leeks, turnips, rutabagas, radishes, sweet potatoes, potatoes, cashews, Jerusalem artichokes, oats, wheat, and yeast in breads. Beer. Cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables that belong to the genus Brassica are thought not only to increase the gas load, but increase the stink factor.

Over two hundred years ago it was noted that climbers who ascend to high altitude experienced increased flatus. This has been of special interest in this century with the advent of space exploration. The combination of low atmospheric pressure, high altitude flight and confined conditions made the issue a special concern.

Indeed, any of us who fly are subject to these stresses. Flight attendants have told me they experience the problem frequently, and rely on the noise of the engines to mask the noise, and brisk movement about the cabin to mask themselves as the source of any odor. One flight attendant advised me that this latter factor is called “crop dusting.”

Flatulence is no laughing matter to many travelers. There are some people who dread having to pass gas when flying so much that they refuse to fly. In 2006 American Flight 1053, from Washington Reagan National Airport and bound for Dallas/Fort Worth, made an emergency landing when crew and passengers reported smelling smoke – which turned out to be from a passenger who lit a match to cover the scent of her farts.

If you are a person who suffers from gas when flying it can be an uncomfortable and embarrassing situation. Here at Skysteward we are all about Jetiquette® and elevating the travel experience. We have found a vendor that sells seat cushion to muffle sound and trap odor:

The cushions come in several designs. Research indicates that the GasBGon cushion actually absorbs more than 90% of the odor emitted for most end users. This is the result of a carbon filter that has the equivalent surface area of a football field.

This product was conceived and developed by Jim and Sharron Huza of Dairiair® products. Jim is an air quality and filtration engineer with more than 25 years of experience in the pulp and paper industry while Sharron is a nursing student and experienced sales and marketing professional. The site (click HERE) not only provides product information, but has a FAQ, user testimonials and even a humor section.

On our March 3 Jetiquette Radio show we have an embarrassment of riches on the topic of TRAVEL WITH CHILDREN. The three women who joined us have tremendous expertise and personal experience traveling with kids and they share their knowledge with us on this show.

Cynthia Harriman and her husband took their kids, aged 10 and 13, to Europe in 1989. They checked the kids out of public school and gave them a mobile education while living in houses in Spain, France and England for four months.

Cynthia experienced first hand the enrichment value of exposing children to life in other countries. Both of her offspring subsequently traveled abroad for study and pleasure. In 1991 Cynthia wrote and self-published a book about their original trip: Take Your Kids To Europe. The book became a best-seller, earning praise from such travel gurus as Rick Steves (Europe Through The Back Door), Dorothy Jordan (Family Travel Times) and the editors of the widely-respected Let’s Go! series from the Harvard Student Travel Association. This book is now in its 8th edition, with almost 40,000 copies sold over time. TYKE encourages families to show kids how to enjoy different cultures – and gives them the tools to do so for surprisingly little money.

Browse the table of contents HERE and see just how much information is packed into this book. After the first edition Cynthia invited readers to share their own advice and experiences, so the book is a wealth of information gleaned from many family roadtrips.

Colleen Lanin is the creator of the Travel Mamas site and author of The Travel Mamas’ Guide. Her site brings together parents and travel professionals who share a wealth of family travel strategies and experiences.

Colleen is a freelance writer whose articles have been published in many leading publications. Her own kids are four (daughter) and one (son), and she currently resides in San Diego where, among other endeavors, she teaches classes on how to travel with kids.

“I have taken many trips since I had my first baby in 2005. My travels vary from road trips, cruises, family visits, and tropical vacations to foreign tours, amusement park adventures, and more.”

Sara Keagle, who has been a guest on Jetiquette radio as a member of the hit podcast The Crew Lounge, has been a flight attendant for 16 years. She writes a popular blog, The Flying Pinto. Sara is a mom, too. She has a two year old daughter and 12 year old step daughter.

Last September Sara entered a blog contest on Colleen’s Travel Mamas site and won. Her essay, “The Bright Side of Flying with Kids” gives valuable and thoughtful advice on getting organized to fly with children and also stresses the quality time that can be enjoyed on a flight with your kids. Being a crew member as well as a passenger traveling with kids provides Sara with unique perspectives on flying with children, and she will share her insights with us.

When we went to Britain that summer Froder came along. Somewhere – I promise to publish them when I find which box they are in – we have photos of Froder enjoying his travels: the food counter at Fortnum and Mason, at the Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle, on the Pleasure Pier at Brighton Beach.

Unlike “full body scanners” that have been in the news lately, that essentially reveal passengers without clothing, this new system reveals the thermal imprint of any material — plastic, wood, ceramics, powder as well as metal — and can reveal objects hidden under clothing. Good news for checkpoint lines — a complete scan and detection takes 30 seconds so passengers can quickly move through security areas. Iscon is also introducing a hand-held device, using the same technology that will be used the way wands are currently utilized. Security personnel can use it to detect objects hidden in “difficult” hiding places.

We are always looking for ways to save our travel dollars and a new vacation rental service caught our attention. PackLate.com is an online service that offers a last minute vacation rental marketplace where consumers watch prices change as the check-in date nears. PackLate.com empowers consumers to save money, find and track great deals, and confidently book closer to their vacation date while realizing they are not alone in their quest to find what they want at a great price. The company launched its first geography, The US Rockies, in January 2010, and has plans to expand vacation rentals to other areas in the coming months.

The service is free. All you need to do is go to Packlate.com and register.

Here at Skysteward we like to say “How you travel says a lot about you.” Let me tell you about two women who helped me find first class travel on a shoestring budget.

Cynthia Harriman and Nan Jeffrey are two moms who gave me great advice and shaped my travel life. I feel like I know them, and their families, but – we have never met. They each wrote books that are so unique and useful that I want to share them with you.

Take Your Kids to Europe: How to Travel Safely (and Sanely) in Europe with Your Children, by Cynthia Harriman, is one of those books that has much more than what you would think by reading the title. Yes, this book will help you if you are planning a trip to Europe with the kids for two weeks this summer. What if you want to run off to Europe for two months, six months, a year? Few of us dream of taking such a daring trip, but when we do the pre-trip arrangements alone are boggling. With this book you will be able to make your to-do lists and get going.

Let me list some of the aspects of your trip that this book addresses: getting your kids out of school for an extended period of time (a biggie!). How to create a budget (another biggie). Ways to take care of your home – from arranging to pay bills, to leasing it out to doing a homestay trade. Once in Europe, Harriman promotes the idea of purchasing a vehicle to use during your stay, and she provides details on purchase and sales. She provides unique sightseeing ideas, ones that are of special appeal to children and teens and which I have not seen in other travel guides. There are many practical suggestions from how to help kids adapt quickly to their new home-away-from-home, how to keep teenagers engaged in the trip, to preparing picky eaters for culture shocks — like the pizzas in Italy that come with clams AND shell on top. Click HERE to see Take Your Kids to Europe site and Cynthia’s blog.

My other mom friend, Nan Jeffrey, wrote Adventuring With Children: An Inspirational Guide to World Travel and the Outdoors. Nan does not “take vacations” – her family lives a life that includes extended, real “adventures.” She and her husband travel to places such as Morocco, Spain, Bali, Nepal, and New Zealand. They sail, bike, hike and drive while living for long stretches in distant lands with their kids. This book gives you practical advice on traveling with infants, toddlers and teens. Nan’s kids have adventured from the time they were tiny tots.

As you might expect, this book does not cover how to dine out at 5-star restaurants. Adventuring with Children is about life lived close to the ground, living “like a local” during your stay. Nan provides excellent advice on choosing tents, gear and clothing; safety; activities while traveling and when settled in a location for a few weeks. She shares her own packing lists, and they are short. Nan explains how to make do with less. One of the most invaluable reads is her personal stories of medical and laundry needs. Any traveler can use these. And anyone traveling with an infant will find Nan’s advice about diapering while traveling valuable.

Although Nan is the one you want to consult if you are planning to spend a few months sailing with a toddler in tow, her advice will be of great value even for a few days trip to a tame location.

The longest trip I have ever taken with my children was a one month trip across Europe with one of my daughters when she was 8 years old. We had train passes, and went from England to France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. We carried a tent – one that Nan Jeffrey recommended – although we did not need to use it often: I discovered when traveling with children people are extra caring. For instance, in Switzerland we were preparing to set up our tent when the camp owner handed me keys to a hostel building that he had just closed for the winter season. Inside were two floors of heated rooms with beds, bathrooms and showers. He charged me the same price as our tent site. I discovered he had a gruff persona, but I surmise his grandfatherly heart was touched by seeing my daughter preparing to tent camp in the rainy chill in the shadow of the Alps.

The advice I garnered from Cynthia and Nan made my travels doable on a tight budget. I successfully signed my daughter out of public school and took her education on the road. (A few years later, from 5th – 11th grades, we moved completely from public school to homeschool, and part of our decision was based on the success and freedom we experienced during our European journey. And a big part was due to knowing successful a successful homeschooling mom likes Nan.) I can attest that traveling is a great education for kids. There is nothing like learning geography first-hand. Meeting people in other countries, learning languages, understanding differences – these are only some of the valuable lessons gleaned while on the road.

Whether you are taking your kids for two weeks to Europe this summer, or planning to pull up stakes and live the vagabond life for a long stretch, these books will be wonderful reads. I predict Cynthia and Nan will become your inspiration and friends, as they have been mine.

Both of these books are available new or used at bookstores, or online from retailers like Amazon, Abe and Alibris.

Yapta enables travelers to find their ideal flights and hotel rooms, track specific airfare and hotel rates, and to be alerted when prices drop – or when they hit a designated price-point. Bringing to light pro-consumer “guaranteed airfare” policies offered by many airlines, Yapta also helps travelers obtain an airline travel voucher when the price of their purchased ticket becomes available for less.

Yapta has recently partnered with TripIt. Now users who forward their flight confirmation emails to TripIt will have Yapta tracking flights for airline refunds or credits with a single click. This will save time, money and the frustration of not having all travel plans in one place. Tom will explain how this partnership will benefit you. For more information visit: www.yapta.com or blog.yapta.com

Making a return to our show is Ellen Simonetti, Queen of the Sky. On her last visit we ran out of time to hear her story, so we asked her to come back. In 2003 Ellen started her blog: Queen of the Sky: Diary of a Dysfunctional Flight Attendant as a form of therapy after the loss of her mother to cancer. In addition to describing events of her life, Ellen also described travel abroad, mainly Europe and South America, while working for Delta Air Lines. With practical information on worldwide travel described in a quirky, irreverent tone, the blog developed a considerable following. In late 2004 she was suspended and then fired after Delta Air Lines objected to her posing for photographs on a company airplane and commentary on her blog. Ellen subsequently renamed her blog Diary of a Fired Flight Attendant. Her blog was captured in a book, Diary of a Dysfunctional Flight Attendant.

A movie about her life is in the works.

Ellen has switched gears and is now promoting health and wellness through alternative therapies. She will tell us about her journey from being fired for blogging, fighting a court battle, and becoming a book author and a guest on the television talk show circuit, to starting a new direction in her life. She has started a new blog about energies and self-healing. We can’t wait to hear this chapter!

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime. ~~Mark Twain

Back in the days when I was a single mom with little money I was bitten by the travel bug. I learned every way I could find to afford travel on the cheap. Train travel, bus travel, hostels, inexpensive hotels, off season travel: I called myself the Queen of Shoesting Travel.

When my youngest daughter was small a then almost unknown young man named Rick Steves published a book on budget travel to Europe. Though I had traveled around North America, I had never been able to visualize going abroad until I met Rick. Soon, with Rick’s book as encouragement, I started flying across the pond on a regular basis.

Thus it was that my youngest daughter was a seasoned world traveler before she left elementary school. Before she entered kindergarten she knew her way around the streets of Paris near our lodgings, and could answer a store clerk’s “Bonjour!” with her own. She knew the word for “egg” in several languages, because she had (has) a passion for Kinder Eggs, a chocolate egg that has a toy inside. (The eggs are not sold in the US, as they are considered a chocking hazard.)

We had spent time in York, England where we had rented a flat overlooking the river Ouse. (By the way, renting a flat can be a very inexpensive way to visit a location, but that is another article.) In the town of York there is a motte – an artificial mound atop which sits Clifford’s Tower, the keep of York Castle. We attended the Jorvik Festival, where participants, dressed in Viking garb, recreate battles and military training. With the image of Vikings battling in the shadow of the motte, my daughter was struck when her kindergarten class sang the ditty,

The mighty Duke of York, he had 10,000 men, he marched them up to the top of the hill, then he marched them down again.

She came home from school to tell me that she had shared her knowledge of the hill in York with the class, but the other kids scoffed, saying they knew it was about New York. And none of them were familiar with England, let alone York, England. Or Vikings.

A few years later she and I were on a commuter train at morning rush hour in Vienna, Austria. We were staying in a campground in the suburbs and commuting in for a day of sightseeing. Around us were people of all ages on their way to work and school. Some were reading the morning papers, or a book, others had headphones on and were listening to their radios or cassette players. Everyone was speaking German. After a few minutes my daughter looked at me and said,

“These people are just like us.”

This remains a golden memory of my life as a mom. At that moment I realized my child had become a citizen of the world, and she was forever changed. No longer was the world divided into “us (Americans), and them.” She had discovered an important truth: we are all people, living our lives in pretty much the same rhythms, with the same basic concerns. Now she is an adult, and I can see clearly the difference travel has made in her life. Unlike many of her peers, news set in distant cities is not “foreign.” If there is an event in Paris, Vienna, Munich, Venice, Lauterbrunnen or York she connects it to a memory, to a place. The world at large has a significance that is lost on people for who “over there” is just a vague concept.

But, let’s be honest: geography can be dry and boring. “Being there” makes it interesting, but not all of us can afford to visit the world at large with our children. Enter “Little Passports: A Global Adventure.”

Winner of the Parent’s Choice Award in 2009,* Little Passports is a wonderful gift idea for children age 6 – 10. It is a subscription service that provides a child with a new packet of adventure each month. Sofia and Sam, the main characters in the program, travel to a new country on their magical scooter and share their experiences. Each mailing includes an adventure letter, fun souvenirs, activities and access to the online Boarding Zone full of games and activities.

As a mom who has traveled the world with my own kids, I think this program would be ideal for on-the-road activity as well. But, even if you cannot travel beyond your mailbox for now, this is a great way for you and your children to explore the world. And, to hear the wonderful words: “These people are just like us.” Which, let me add, is one of the cornerstones of achieving Jetiquette.

*The Parents’ Choice Awards committees look for products that entertain and teach with flair, stimulate imagination and inspire creativity. Judges are interested in how a product helps a child grow: socially, intellectually, emotionally, ethically, physically. Products must be free of bias. Above all, products must not extol violence.

Director Kevin Smith was in the news, the latest in a string of passengers Southwest Airlines judged as too big for one of their seats. To help sort out the controversy and look at effective solutions we will be joined by Bill Fabrey from the Council on Size and Weight Discrimination, Inc. Bill helped found the Council in 1991, along with seven others, and has served as a director since that time. Bill has been an advocate for size acceptance since 1969 when he founded NAAFA (National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance). His interest in human factors engineering relates to the fact that as a retired biomedical engineer, he has a special interest in how people, especially larger people, can be helped (or hindered) by technology. Such information as increases in the size and weight limits on medical imaging devices (such as MRI’s), or mobility products such as scooters or wheelchairs, or the availability of office chairs and other furniture with higher size and weight limits, and so forth, always catches Bill’s attention.

FLIGHT ATTENDANTS. You’ve seen them chatting in the galley, you’ve seen them give each other knowing looks, you’ve had them tell you to put away your electronic devices and stow your tray tables. You know they perform a mysterious “cross check” at certain intervals. You’ve seen them flirt with the passenger in 3C, and reprimand the guy in 17D who hasn’t turned off his cell phone. You’ve seen them depart and arrive at the airport in vans. Here is your chance to find out about their glamorous and hidden lives. We are joined by Sara and Bobby, hosts of the hit podcast The Crew Lounge. Once you have had a taste for their wit, snark and inside information you will want to make sure to tune in each week to their shows.

We have the honor of hearing from Ellen Simonetti , aka “Queen of Sky” In 2003 Ellen started her blog: Queen of the Sky: Diary of a Dysfunctional Flight Attendant as a form of therapy after the loss of her mother to cancer.

These events became emblematic of the issue of employees’ rights to communicate their own views of their work and workplace versus employers’ rights to restrict them. There was considerable media coverage of Simonetti’s firing and the freedom of expression issues involved. Simonetti advocates:

1. that employers should have clear, unambiguous blogging policies, so that employees can foresee the potential for disciplinary action, and 2. that the penalty for a first offense should be a formal warning rather than dismissal. We will get an update from Ellen and find out how her life has changed since she left Delta.

Air-besity is in the headlines again! How’s a person to know?

No, this is not a joke about being a large person, I promise! People of size must have a way to know for sure if they are in fact too large to purchase just one seat.

Kevin Smith being booted from a Southwest Airlines flight reminds us that it can happen to anyone, you and I included. By looking at Kevin, you would not think he would be TFx2 (Too-Fat-Too-Fly) based on many larger people who fly freely. So how do we make sure that we’re not going to be escorted off of an airplane by a police officer holding a Twinkie up and walking backwards towards the door? This is coming from someone who could eat a whole box in no time flat, so I am being serious here. Some airlines are stricter than others, but if a flight is full it seems that most airlines are left with no other choice than to ignore the situation or remove someone from the plane. Airlines need to do a much better job of clarifying the rules as to not surprise and embarrass someone.

Do I need this?

Here is what I did to check out my situation:

Went to SeatGuru to see the size of a Southwest Airlines 737 seat.

Located the seat width of a 737 which is 17 inches. Plus about 1 inch between seats that allows for a little “spillover”. This must be split with the adjacent passenger.

Sat in a chair and took a measuring tape out. My RSD (rear-spread-distance from outside cheek to outside cheek) came in at 16 inches

My shoulders measured out at 19 inches. Uh oh!

Technically, I think I may be TFx2! My shoulders are taking up too much space. My butt is fine in this case if I do say so myself. When I think about it, I do have to cross my arms in front most time in the middle seat to keep my shoulders from infringing on the space of the people sitting next to me. Fortunately, the aisle and window seats have a little extra space to shift into, giving the center seat passenger more grace-space.

The verdict: If your overall “spread distance” is more than 2 inches over the width of the airline seat, you may be in the danger zone. Remember that even if the armrests contain your RSD (rear spread distance), spillover may occur over the armrest. Spare yourself any discomfort and check with the airline for the purchase of an extra seat or possibly arrange for an upgrade if possible.

At the rate I’m going, I will definitely be keeping an eye on my TFx2 status!

Randy is editor and publisher of Inside Flyer. Considered the leading publication in the world about frequent traveler programs, Inside Flyer has readers in all 50 U.S. states and 134 countries. He is also the editor of The Official Frequent Flyer Guidebook; a regular speaker at business travel seminars and conferences in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and Asia; and is often called upon by the industry itself for his comments and suggestions about frequent traveler programs.

Randy is referred to as “the most influential frequent flyer in America” by the Wall Street Journal. As a former marketing and merchandise presentation manager for a large menswear retailer, Randy spent much of his time flying and keeping accurate records of his mileage awards. “Nearly everyone I knew would come to me for advice on their frequent traveler programs.” When it got to the point of constantly advising people, many which he had never met, Randy started his own newsletter and the business has grown ever since. In fact, it now consists of 12 separate businesses, all of which deal with frequent travel programs. To get an idea of the range of Randy’s innovation, check out his website WebFlyer and browse the programs.

Randy is witty, charismatic, and knows everything there is to know about making every mile count! You will not want to miss this interview.

We’ll also talk about ways to keep all of your loyalty programs organized as we welcome the creators of Award Wallet , an online tool that acts as your personal mileage manager. An innovative, secure, free web service, Award Wallet helps travelers track their frequent flyer miles. It also does much more. Award Wallet has been operating a data tracking, retrieval, and management system following customer loyalty programs for several years with positive reviews from the media, travel writers, and their own frequent flier customer base.

If you’ve wondered about what goes on in the galley, on the jumpseat, or in the crew lounge; check out “The Crew Lounge”, a weekly podcast from Upgrd.com. Margery has been raving about this entertaining show that answers many questions that most frequent fliers may have about how airline crews live, work, and layover. Have you ever wondered what’s being said about you in the galley? You just may find out here, but it’s all in good fun from people that love what they do!

Tune in to The Crew Lounge

I had the opportunity to join the hosts of the Crew Lounge; Sara Keagle from FlyingPinto.com and Bobby Laurie from UpUpandaGay.com on one of their episodes. What a fun pair offering lots of laughs and commiseration as we talked about scheduling, flight cancellations, and so much more but you’ll have to listen to find out. I was pleased that they did not edit some of the comments I made during the taping about my early years of looking for love in the concourse. You must know that this taping session was very late at night and my filter had already shut down for the evening. I would tell anyone to subscribe to this podcast via iTunes and enjoy it while you’re flying or if you want to feel like you’re flying.
