According to CNN, Paco, a dog adopted in Mexico by Delta customer Josiah Allen, was lost in transit between Puerto Vallarta, where the dog was adopted by Allen and his girlfriend, and Detroit. Paco made it from Puerto Vallarta to Mexico City, but disappeared after a layover in Mexico City on May 3 and never made it to Detroit.
“I am hopeful that Delta will be able … to locate and retrieve Paco and that he can come to my home and be loved and cared for,” Allen told CNN.
Delta spokesperson Susan Elliot told CNN, “Our staff have conducted exhaustive searches to locate the dog,” and that Delta offers its “sincere apologies that we have been unable to recover the dog.”
In the meantime, Delta has compensated Allen and offered to reimburse all expenses that he incurred in adopting and transporting the dog.
The CNN video states they the owners let Paco out of the carrier during the layover in Mexico City, so it’s possible that the carrier was not locked back properly when he was put back in for the next flight. And in the written story, it states that the owner signed a waiver accepting that the carrier was too small for Paco. If that is the case, then perhaps that is another possibility of how Paco was able to work his way out of the carrier.
A lesson to be learned here is to always know an airline’s policies with regard to transporting animals and make sure that you have an airline-compliant carrier that is the right size for your pet.
