Because of the decades of US restrictions on travel to Cuba most Americans are likely unaware that Cuba is a popular tourist destination. A record 2.4 million foreigners visited Cuba last year, including some 100,000 Americans.  As of May 1, 2010, the Cuban government is requiring all tourists to show proof of comprehensive travel insurance including medical insurance.

Insurance kiosks have appeared at some Cuban airports, although reports indicate this service is not available at all international entry points.  A policy covering medical expenses up to 7,000 pesos, or $7,560, costs between 2 and 3 pesos ($2.16-$3.24) a day, depending on various of factors. Travelers 70 or older or those planning to engage in high-risk activities will have to pay an unspecified additional premium.

The expense is certainly small, but travelers are cautioned to arrange for insurance well ahead of their travel to prevent the expensive scenario of being denied entry due to lack of insurance.

Tourists find Cuban beaches to be the best in the Caribbean, its culture is unique in Latin America, and its history is fascinating.  The quality of Cuba’s tourist infrastructures has improved a great deal over the last 30 years. The airports are modern and are served by international carriers. The hospitality industry is thriving. Visitors can choose from cheap government-owned lodgings to 5-star world-class resort properties operated by the best European chains.  Cuisine in Cuba also runs the gamut from European trained chefs to local eateries that feature island delights and local specialties.

The Cuba Ministry of Foreign Affairs website has full information on the insurance requirement and other useful information. Visit their site by clicking HERE.

Note: Americans wishing to visit Cuba should contact a tour operator specializing in Cuba travel.
