Does flight attendant appearance make a difference to you?

We’ve heard the stories of passengers being removed from airplanes from being inappropriately dressed, but what about how passengers perceive the crew? Have you ever made up your mind about your flight crew based only on their glamour score?

I'm pretty! I have to be sweet too?

Cocktail Conversation

From dinner parties to airport lounges, everyone has their opinions about what makes a good flight attendant. Is it just looks and poise that makes a good flight attendant or are we not that shallow? I have a suspicion that, when it comes to flight attendants, what people say and how they feel are two very different things. An example of this would be the Southwest Airlines pilot that described flight attendants he had flown with as either gays, grandes or grannies. I can almost guarantee you that he would have had a more politically correct response had he know he was being listened in on.

Groomed, Gracious or Gorgeous?

Is being well groomed sufficient or must every flight attendant be model material to be considered a super-stew? Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines are two airlines that have gained quite a reputation for hiring stews that are very easy to look at but is warmth and attentiveness tied to beauty?

Beautiful Service!

Do you agree that appearance affects how you view the professionalism of your cabin crew when you fly? When you see a flight attendant wearing a sloppy, wrinkled uniform, does it change your opinion about their capabilities or influence how you judge the airline you are flying? What about if your flight attendant was immaculately put together and infinitely friendly, but 40 pounds overweight? Could they still rate a 10 with you?

My Opinion

When I encounter a flight attendant that demonstrates a caring, professional attitude and obvious attention to their appearance, I am always impressed. It would be so silly and unfair to base my opinion solely on weight, age, physical beauty, etc.. In other words, cover-model with a sour attitude rates an instant zero with me.

Speaking for some flight attendants… we try our hardst to kook nice but we get these insanely unflattering uniforms that wrinkle the moment we get in the jump seat. So you honestly shouldnt judge us by our uniforms. Its definitely difficult to put our best faces forward when we are uncomfortable in what we are wearing but i would hope that you judge us more on how we treat you in regards to how you treat us. We are definitely abused by some of them and its unfair that you get to judge us.

The question begs to be answered. And yes, in my opinion appearance has a lot to do with the flying experience. As a former FA for Pan American World Airways, I can attest to you what I see out THERE….is almost total non reg! Employees such as in flight service are part of the “front line” of an airline. And looking the part, whether or not your uniform is ‘wrinkled’. HINT….sometimes if there was no cleaning downline, we would hang our uniform in the shower and s t e a m it! I have come across some pretty poorly dressed men and women on the line recently. I am aware of EEOC, and lack of the weight restrictions; however, is it too much to ask for a smile, a little lip-color, neat beard or hair. When you represent a large company whether transcontinental or global, flight attendants should have something called P R I D E. I know times are tough, benefits and pays have been drastically cut; however, if you care, then take care and look the part. Now flying as a passenger, I still wear “deadhead attire” and though pay for baggage, snacks on board, pillows, and extra for that extra legroom at bulklheads and emergency exit rows, I don’t think that the crews frankly give a #$@!# anymore. And if that’s the attitude then it’s time to hang up your wings and find something else to do. I loved it, and took pride in my appearance, even if it was an o dark hundred report!!!! Disgusted flyer.
