As a mother, I’ve had my share of flying with kids. As a businesswoman, I’ve witnessed my share of watching stressed families rush through airports while the entire travel party bickers and argues. Use these tips to survive and enjoy airport time with your kids.

1. Don’t schedule tight layovers. It never fails – I see stressed families running through terminals trying to make their flights. Mom & Dad are always five or six paces ahead of the kids, who have no chance of catching up. That’s not fun for anyone. Especially if the children are of elementary-school age.

2. Always carry snacks. On your person – not in your checked luggage.

3. Make it fun. Consider giving your kids a wrapped gift while you’re waiting at the gate. Ideas include word searches, video games, new coloring books & crayons, their favorite snacks, etc. To those of you not familiar with child bribery, this translates to items that keep them occupied in-flight which, in turn, makes *your* time on the plane all the much better. Combine that with a nice cocktail and you’ll be set.

4.   B-Complex vitamins for all involved. B-comlex is a stress-relief vitamin. My entire family takes it and I make sure that no one misses a dose during travel (and this includes pre-travel activities such as shopping & packing). It works wonders!!! Of course, you should always check with your doctor prior to introducing something new to your family.

5. Check your attitude. If you as the parent are having a bad day or exuding stress, stop it. The old adage, “If Mom ain’t happy, no one is happy,” applies to all adults in your travel party. Kids are smart and can quickly pick-up on your attitude. They won’t adapt to it. Rather, they’ll object to it in ways you won’t want to have to deal with.

  1. wonderful – love these tips!! it’s also great to stretch and do mini games (like who can do 15 jumping jacks without laughing) while waiting at the gate.
