I heard someone say that placing Neosporin in your nostrils is a great way to prevent illness when traveling by air. It sounded like a great idea to me at first, but after squeezing a tube of it into my nose and a little further investigation, I learned that it was not effective from a scientific standpoint. So what are some ways to stay healthy while traveling in cramped, crowded airplanes known for their partially recirculated air. At Dear Sky Steward, we decided to ask our friends at MIT for some advice. What we found is that our chances of staying healthy are better if proper sneezing and coughing Jetiquette are being practiced. However, remember that it’s not just about what you’re breathing, but also about how you’re eating when in transit that can make a big difference health-wise.

Dr. Howard M. Heller, MD, MPH, Chief of Medicine at MIT Medical, talks about how to stay safe while traveling. He speaks about common “myths” regarding airplane travel, and demonstrates safe and unsafe ways to eat on the plane.  Dr. Heller is a frequent flier and friend of Dear Sky Steward . He will guest with us on future episodes. Stay tuned — and get your travel health questions ready.

  1. Replying to the suggestion of Neosporin in the nostrils. I used to come back from every trans-Atlantic flight with a cold. I heard the same easy fix and haven’t had a cold since. USE A COTTON SWAB to carefully line the opening to nostrils (on the inside, of course). I do it before I leave the house so I can see what I am doing.I also observe other healthy habits such as keeping my hands away from my face, drinking lots of fluids, and keeping hand sanitizer in my purse to use if I touch a questionable surface. It works for me.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this. Maybe there is something to it. It is amazing how much it helps if everyone keeps their hands clean!
