As a frequent traveler, and one who insists on carry-on only, I’m always looking for ways to squeeze more into that drasted quart-sized 3-1-1 bag.  As a woman, that’s not always easy – I love my special toiletries.

These tips, though applicable to everyone who flies, will truly benefit those who fly carry-on only.

1.  Use samples or solids of common products.

Unless you use a special shampoo & conditioner because you’re not really a natural blonde because you love it, either don’t pack it at all (use the hotel’s hair products), pack foil-packet samples or use a solid shampoo & conditioner.

My hair stylist knows that I travel frequently (mainly because of the panicked calls I make to her asking for a root touch-up the day before I leave…ssshhh, don’t tell anyone I’m not a natural blonde).  Her salon always receives samples and I have her trained to save them for me.  Those foil packets really increase extra usable space in my 3-1-1 bag.

Lush offers handmade solid shampoos & conditioners (among other things) that do NOT have to be put in your 3-1-1 bag.

2.  Use non-liquid foundation.

Liquid foundations (and other liquid/gel make-up products) take up a lot of space. Consider switching to a mineral-based powder, which travels in your carry-on, not your 3-1-1 bag.

3. Use smaller refillable bottles.

It’s amazing the difference an ounce makes. In cocktails and in your 3-1-1 bag. By simply reducing the size of your refillable containers by just an ounce, you greatly increase the space in that bag.  Also, look for containers that are flatter – they pack easier.

4. Find clever ways to transport your liquids & gels.

Eye make-up remover is a perfect example.  If you use a liquid-type remover, saturate q-tips or cotton balls with the product and place them in a snack-size Ziplock bag.  Alternatively, Almay makes an eye make-up remover pad that’s pre-moistened with the product (straight into a snack-size Ziplock bag).  I’ve transported all of these suggestions in my carry-on, freeing up valuable space in my 3-1-1 bag.

Instead of transporting containers of facial cleanser, use facial cleansing cloths.  Again – perfect for your carry-on & one less thing to stuff in the 3-1-1 bag.

5.  Use a high-quality durable zippered bag.

The stronger the bag, the more you can cram into it without fear of breakage.

NOTE: Mascara, lip gloss & lip balm; “solid” deodorant.

The following is a quote from the TSA Blog:

Common size facial cosmetic and medicinal products in a tube, for example mascara, lip gloss, and lip balm are not required to be placed in the 1 qt. bag.

Though the TSA says it’s OK, you’re subject to the individual TSOs interpretation of the rules.  Unfortunately, sometimes the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing.

This article on the TSA Blog states that stick deodorant is fine for your carry-on (doesn’t need to be placed in your 3-1-1 bag).

I always place my mascara, lip gloss, lip balm & stick deodorant in my 3-1-1 bag. I figure they’re liquids/gels and, quite frankly, don’t have the time for a bag search (or the patience).

How do you travel with items like these? In your carry-on or your 3-1-1 bag? Leave a comment below & let us know.  We’d love to hear from you!

    Hey Carol…

Some other great hits for samples… is FRESH. Another great help for me and travel is my Trish Work book in quilted black… it has everything tucked away and most cosmetic counters will give you tiny little bottles for foundation… enough to get you through the week or two away!

  2. I always pack full-sized deodorants, shampoo/conditioner, etc. in gallon ziplocs in my checked rolling garment carrier. I have only a small toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, and contact solution in my 3-1-1 in case my baggage is delayed. This leaves room in my bag for medical gels/creams without having to go through the special screening. Also, most pharmacies have the “carmex” containers (small tubs) that are only about 1 oz. These seem to work for both medications and shampoo, if only enough for one/two applications.
